Outdoor privacy screens for decks, pools and courtyards
A screen blocks the view where you need it, without walling in the whole garden. It can stand on its own, sit on a deck or wall, or fill part of a fence.
Where a privacy screen helps
- Decks and balconies
- Screen a neighbour's window or a side of the deck that faces the street.
- Pool and spa areas
- Add privacy behind the pool fence, or around a spa.
- Courtyards and side passages
- Close off a view, or hide a clothesline or a work area.
- Bins and equipment
- Louvre enclosures for bins, pumps and air-conditioning units.
How private a screen feels depends on its height, the gaps and where people look from. No screen hides everything from every angle; we look at the sightlines with you on site.
How open should your screen be?
Every screen trades light and breeze for privacy. The gap between slats, and their angle, decide where yours sits.
-
Open slats
Wide gaps. Filters the view and keeps most of the light and breeze.
-
Close slats
Narrow gaps. Much more privacy, with some light and air still coming through.
-
Louvres
Angled blades block a straight-on view but let air move through.
Fence infills between piers and on walls
Infill panels fill the spaces between brick or rendered piers, or sit on top of a low front wall. They finish a front fence and can match a new gate.
Want a full slat fence rather than infills? See slat fencing. For boundaries where controlling access matters most, compare security fencing.
Louvres and decorative panels
Beyond plain slats, almost any design can be made. Select a photo to see it larger.
Privacy screen questions
Still deciding? Call 1300 311 950 and we will talk it through.
A slat fence runs along a boundary as the fence itself. Screening is used in particular spots: a privacy screen on a deck, infills between piers, or a louvre enclosure. Many jobs use both. See slat fencing for boundary fences.
Usually, yes. The slats on this page are examples, and almost any design can be made. Bring photos or a sketch of what you like to the measure.
Not always. How private it feels depends on the height, the gaps between slats and where people look from. Closer slats and louvres give more privacy; we will look at the sightlines with you on site.
It depends on the height, the location and your council's rules, and some screens need approval. Check with your council or certifier before you go ahead, particularly for tall screens on a boundary or a raised deck.
